Roldana petasitis (Sims) H.Rob. & Brettell
AsteraceaeThe Velvet groundsel, also known as California geranium although it comes from Mexico, is a fast growing shrub of the extended family of Asteraceae, named like that for its star-shaped flowers -aster in Greek- and in the Velvet groundsel they are yellow and spectacular, forming clumps. Their leaves take on a reddish hue that make this scrub a colorful floor, ideal for decorating gardens in warm climates, since plants of this genus have excellent heat resistance. Its generic name comes from the Latin senescere, but also distinguished by gender, Roldana given by a Mexican naturalist priest in honor of Eugenio Roldán Montaña and Otumbensi, one of the heroes of the independence of Mexico from the Spanish crown, consummated in 1821. Paradoxically Eugenio was born in Otumba, site of the famous battle that happened in 1520 where, after the 'sad night' Cihuacóatl Matlatzincátzin missed the chance to beat the conqueror Hernán Cortés.
