Native to Taiwan, its use in home gardening is widespread globally, mainly as a houseplant grown in pots, such as the ones proliferating in Seville patios. Karol Čapek, one of the most important writers of the twentieth century in Czech language, celebrated creator of fictions as R.U.R (where the term robot was first coined) or the War of Salamanders, as well as lesser known works as The Year of the Gardener, visited Sevilla coinciding with the Ibero-American fair 1929, being impressed by the city and its gardens full of pots, especially those of the Alcazar: 'The Spanish Garden is at the same time, an architecture of interwoven scissors, ceramic fountains, terraces, roundabouts and stairs, strewn with pots, populated by a forest of palm trees and vines. And all this sometimes fit into a space no bigger than the palm of the hand, with fountains and canals. In my life I have seen such an extraordinarily concentrated garden and fertile as in Spain. The English landscape park is refined; the Spanish garden is an artificial paradise. The French park is a monumental building; the Spanish garden is an intimate dream.'
