The generic Latin name comes from a species of this genus Viburnum lantana, called the 'walking tree'. Of Eurasian origin, viburnun suspensum is one of the symbols of Ukraine. Thus, just as its relative Viburnum opulus, also present in the gardens of the Real Alcázar, it is mentioned in Slavic folklore for centuries, associated in pagan Slavic cultures to the birth of the universe; its fruit symbolize the blood and immortal trace of family roots. In those pre-Christian traditions the viburnum, called in the language of Ukraine kalyna, represented the beauty of the young woman. The song 'The red viburnum on the prairie' became an anthem of the Ukrainian guerrilla resistance during World War II against the Nazis first and the Soviets later. For this reason, today, viburnum remains one of the symbols of Ukraine.
