It is a small tree native to China, widely cultivated in southern Europe for its fruit and ornamental character. According to tradition, the peach was brought to Europe from Persia by Alexander the Great, after his conquests in the land of Armenia. The peach was extended by Italy in times of ancient Rome, as testified by a Pompeian fresco depicting a plant with light colored fruits identified as peaches. Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, remembered that peach trees belong to the species of fruits consisting of three parts, that is, the fruit itself, the bone and inside it the seed: for this reason they were associated after the image of the Trinity, fruit of salvation, also after that, during the flee to into Egypt, a peach would have bended in the presence of Jesus. According to legend, now medieval, to the Moor builders who worked for King Pedro I in the Real Alcázar, these trees reminded them of the snowy landscape of Granada by the abundance and the whiteness of its flowers, and for this reason it is said that they were planted in the gardens of the Alcázar. Today we can contemplate them in the garden of the Ladies where their flowering is one of the most beautiful sights of these spaces.
