The generic name annona is derived from the name that these trees were given by the Taino Indians of the Caribbean. It comes from a region of subtropical climate: no wonder why its cultivation in Granada and Malaga valleys have been successful, as this is an area of Spain with a similar climate to those in the areas of origin of this tree. The cherimoya is one of the hundreds of American plants identified by José de Acosta in his Natural and Moral History of the Indies. This book appeared in Seville in 1590, after a century of the discovery, at a time when it was becoming apparent that the knowledge of American nature had overflowed the interpretative possibilities of traditional knowledge. It was no longer possible to rely on the classical authorities as Pliny the Elder, it was necessary to account for the many innovations introduced by almost one hundred years of descriptive studies. This task was accomplished with great efficiency by José de Acosta in his Natural and Moral History of the Indies. The influence of the work was extraordinary and was cited by great names of universal biology and geography of the nineteenth century as Alexander von Humboldt.
