The bougainvillea is a climbing shrub native to Brazil that adheres to the walls and other plant species with the stingers of its stem. Its scientific name refers to the French explorer Louis Antoine Bougainville, who discovered the species that bears his name in Rio de Janeiro in 1767. The French explorer brought specimens in his boat back to Europe. Until the 18th century, Spain and Portugal were main naval powers, but they lost control of the seas in favor of Britain and France.
