The agapanthus name comes from the Greek words agape, love, and anthos, flower, therefore means 'flower of love'. From South Africa, which in Spanish was also called African lily. It is interesting how the agapanthus, through the flower trade made by English and Dutch, has been successfully extended for various regions of the world such as California, southern Chile, Australia and the countries of the Mediterranean basin. This process is mainly caused by the fact that its place of origin, South Africa, enjoys very similar climate to the mentioned territories: in a global classification of climates on Earth, all these regions correspond to the Mediterranean climate, although are widely separated in space, they seem to be part of the same theoretical continent. Therefore, it is relatively straightforward to thrive in Sevilla Mediterranean plants from other continents, such as the agapanthus, the trumpet vine, the spider plant, etc. Interestingly, these regions represent only 2% of the Earth's surface, however, have a 20% of endemic plants. Precisely these qualities led the French gardener Gilles Clément to experience in one space, called Domaine du Rayol and in the south of France, with the combination and co-evolution of Mediterranean landscapes from different continents. Under concepts such as garden or planetary motion garden this place is, like the gardens of the Alcázar, a true index planetaire.
